The Traditional Floral Designs of Persian Urban & Cultural Centers At its height, the Persian Empire stretched from the Turkey to India. The great cities of the Empire each developed a look of their own and those designs are, today, the mainstay of modern rug industry. These rugs are typically very ornate and are full of curved motifs ranging from a single flower to a hunting scene with humans and animals. The sophisticated, three dimensional quality of the drawing in these rugs is a reflection of the degree to which Persian culture itself had evolved - most notably in urban areas where the modern notion of division of labor had become a way of life.
VGR 10039 Persian Backtiari
This Backtiari with its repeating design of floral "cameos" is a classic Persian Garden design. The Backtiaris are a tribal group from the South Western districts on Iran and many of their rugs are more geometric in nature.  These floral pieces are representative of a formal Persian garden and show the influence of French culture on Persian weaving.[ view larger image ]
Detail of Shah Abas Palmette (Kashan Design)
The overall design using this motif is attributed to the ruler Shah Abas who is said to have commissioned weavers to create a design in his name and honor. The palmette is a stylized pomegranite-like shape: these are connected in the overall pattern to serrated leaves by sweeping curved lines in elegant repeats.  The classic William Morris carpet is fashioned on this motif. Sarouk with Floral Spray Motifs
The design of this navy Sarouk is typical of thousands of rugs from the village of Sarouk which were imported into the US in the first two quarters of the 20th century. The vast majority of these rugs were red. India has recently revived production of this design and this blue scatter rug is an excellent example of the contemporary version of this fine, old Persian design. [ view larger image ]
Kashan with Vase Motif
This 1930's Kashan features corners adorned with another classic design in Persian weaving - the Vase. This representation appears with great regularity in older carpets from Kerman, Kashan, and Teheran. The motif can be an element of the carpet or the vase can be foundation of a pictorial carpet with a one way design featuring a spray of intricate flowers. [ view larger image ]
Persian Kazvin
This lovely Kazvin dates from the 1930s.  The floral sprays show the influence of both French design and the American Sarouk as it was exported beginning in about 1915.  At 70-80 years of age the rug is in perfect condition not in small part owing to the excellent materials and craftsmanship typical of these pieces before World War II.  This carpet measures 8"9" x 11'11": it is priced at $9495. [ view larger image ]
