The Traditional Floral Designs of Persian Urban & Cultural Centers
Floral rugs, by contrast, are curvilenear and were made on permanent large scale looms in a more "production-like" setting in the well developed village or urban area; this is where the historically significant pieces of the great mosques and palaces of the Persian Empire were woven.
At its height, the Persian Empire stretched from the Turkey to India. The great cities of the Empire each developed a look of their own and those designs are, today, the mainstay of modern rug industry. These rugs are typically very ornate and are full of curved motifs ranging from a single flower to a hunting scene with humans and animals. The sophisticated, three dimensional quality of the drawing in these rugs is a reflection of the degree to which Persian culture itself had evolved - most notably in urban areas where the modern notion of division of labor had become a way of life.
