Area Rugs

Rustigians has been the Rhode Island’s leading source for area rugs for 80 years. In recent years handmade carpets have expanded vastly in terms of the range of colors and designs available in the market. During the 1980’s innovative exporters with a forward thinking sense of design began to experiment with color. The traditional Herez was a rug bathed in rust, navy, ivory and rose: suddenly, it exploded onto the design frontier reworked to feature pastel blue and apple green as the dominant hues. The weaving world began to re-interpret…. to mix it all up…. and exciting new rugs were emerging with classic lines and innovative colors.

Soon the Tibetan rug began to take off in a big way and texture became the newest and most sophisticated design feature. This trend continues today and texture has blended naturally with bold new contemporary designs that lend a quiet and commanding richness to the modern décor
And there is the ironic outcome of the tragedy of war. From the country of Afghanistan now come some of the most beautiful, innovative and sophisticated rugs of all. And again, they represent both the traditional look of old Caucasian masterpieces and a new style of re-colored and reworked designs perfect for fashion forward contemporary homes. Increasingly, Tibetan style and Afghanistani rugs are the pieces chosen to enhance our collection and they now form the real core of our boutique style showroom. The photograph above and to the right is a detail of a new Afghanistani carpet woven in a Bidjar design. The colors are clear and vibrant and the workmanship is superb.
